After a customer service call gone wrong, I was very angry and couldn't seem to get a grip on it. I called Katherine and the plan was born. Most anyone who has lived in Topeka awhile knows about the angry corner: 17th & Gage. That's where (or across the street at 15th & Gage) Westboro Baptist Church holds their work week-day 15 minute protests. You've seen the signs. God hates this and God hates that. I decided that it would be cathartic and funny if I could join in with a God Hates Verizon sign. So I did (I got about 10 minutes of protest in before the cold got to me).
My wireless shutter remote wasn't working, so Katherine snapped the photo. My sign kind of pales in comparison to theirs, but...there it is.
Before I followed through I thought a lot about it. I mean, Westboro Baptist folks and I don't agree on much. But, I am glad they have the right to express their beliefs and opinions. That's one of the best things about this country.
I was going to post the break-up letter I wrote to Verizon (but haven't yet sent), but I think I'll keep it simple (though seriously, when the contract is up July 26th- we're gone).
Oh, and Jael (far right) got my photo too. Happy Tuesday, Sara
Excellent work. Although true hatred calls for a san serif font.

Sara, You might be pleased to know that your photo has gone kind of "world-wide viral" with an "Atta Girl" link from a technical website in which I participate. (That's how I found your posting.)

Extremely bad customer service calls for an equally extreme response. You, my dear, are delightfully appropriate!

Great photo! I found this prank to be oddly appropriate, when one considers Verizon's new slogan "Rule the Air", for Satan is called the "prince of the power of the air" in Ephesians 2:2, or something to that effect, depending upon translation and interpretation. I wouldn't be surprised if fundamentalists with a conspiratorial bent don't start giving Verizon "the business" on their own accord, what with their new ad campaign.

I just love the fact that there's an "angry corner"! Especially since others join in on it and it's not just the West Baptist Church people (because I too have very little in common with their beliefs). Funny!

Hi Sarah.. ran across your blog, when a friend on FB posted a link to your 'Verizon' sign. Too Funny!
Also, btw.. noticed the link on your typepad page (to your portfolio?) is broken just an FYI.
Rgrds!

I also found your link through someone on facebook. I do think it was kind of funny taking your sign out there...!
But~ I just had to apologize for that church. I don't agree with what they are doing... Christianity is about loving-- not hating, others. I'm SOOO sorry that they are doing that... please know that there is more to Christ than 'hating'.... SO much more.
